KOMODO ARE ALMOST EXTINCT

            Komodo are native Indonesian animals on the Komodo Island, Flores, East Nusa Tenggara. Komodo are the largest lizard in the world, with 3 meters long and weight 136 kilograms. Komodo have saliva containing dangerous bacteria. With that saliva, Komodo can kill victims within 24 hours. Komodo food are all kinds of meat, even Komodo are cannibals.

            Unfortunately, now the Komodo is almost extinct. In 2017, there were only 3012 Komodo in nature. Because of this extinct, the government has set Komodo Island in East Nusa Tenggara to become national parks. The government sets the Komodo as an animal that protected and can’t be hunted. Those who violate with get punishment.

            The factor that causes the extinction of the Komodo is illegal hunting. Hunters usually hunt Komodo for their organs and then sell them on the black market because the organs are expensive. Hunting like this has a direct impact on the population of Komodo that live in the wild.

            The second factor is fire in the Komodo habitat. Fires that caused Komodo population decreased were fires on Paddy Island. This fire destroyed the Komodo population on the Paddy Island, because after that no more Komodo were found on the island.

            The Komodo original habitat is a volcanic island. Where the volcanic activity often happens, including earthquakes. This situation can reduce the population of Komodo. The extinction of Komodo because tourist attractions can also cause the extinction of Komodo because tourist attractions cause Komodo habitat to become narrow.

            Komodo are almost extinction, for that we must make efforts to protect them.
