Sumatran Elephant and Sumatran Tiger are almost Extinct

Indonesia is an archipelago country that has a diversity of fauna on each island, including Sumatra island. On sumatra island there are almost extinct animals, that is Sumatran elephants and Sumatran tigers. These two animals are endemic Sumatran animals that only a little left in nature, so the government set these two animals as protected animals.

Based on a survey in 2000, there were only 2000 to 2700 sumatran elephants left in the nature. Sumatran elephants is almost extinct because of illegal hunting and animals illegal trade. Sumatran elephants are mostly hunted for their ivory and then sold ilegally. Hunting like this has a direct impact on the population of sumatran elephants that live in the nature.

Then, based on 2004 data, the sumatran tigers population is predicted not reach 400. Sumatran tigers are almost extinct because their habitat are disappear. This condition makes the sumatran tiger’s prey decrease. Other than that, illegal hunting is also a cause of extinction of sumatran tigers.

The almost extinction of these two animals must be taken seriously. Currently there are several national parks to protect these two animals. Such as Way kambas national park in lampung and Bukit barisan selatan national park located on the tip of the southwestern of sumatra island. Other than that, the protection law for these two animals is currently stipulated, that is law number 5 year 1990.

Sumatran elephants and sumatran tigers are almost extinct, for that we must make efforts to protect them. The effort that we do is make reservation and protect their natural habitat, give understanding to the community to participate in preserving sumatran elephants and sumatran tigers habitat , the government should make rules to not hunt these two animals, and give sanctions on Sumatran elephants and sumatran tigers hunters.
